Carefree, friendly Margate, the holiday centre of the coast is where the action is in-season or out-of-season. Its long, sandy beach made safe by shark nets and a force of permanent, professional lifesavers must rate as one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in the Republic. Near the main beach there’s a lovely children's pool, pleasure craft for hire plus a freshwater Olympic pool. For those who like to stroll and enjoy the sea air there’s a paved footpath extending along the coastline past the fishing pier for a distance of approximately 1km. This is a place where you can be sure of meeting the locals.

Margate is one of South Africa’s premier tourist destinations and offers visitors a wide choice of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. For those who enjoy their food the area abounds with a wonderful selection of fine restaurants, inviting pubs and fast food outlets.

Margate's swimming beach is a wonderful spot with fishing piers, shops, supermarkets and entertainment galore. For those days where weather works against one there are other activities like wild water rafting or taking a barge trip on the Umzimkulu (also known as Mzimkhulu) River, and a visit to Oribi Gorge, inland of Margate. This 'place of echoes' is millions of years old and the views alone are worth setting out for. View sites include Lovers' Leap, the Overhanging Rock, the Needle and Lehr's waterfall.

In the same vicinity you can take a coffee tour in Echo Valley that overlooks part of Oribi Gorge. This coffee farm produces 100% Arabica Coffee, has its own roasting facility and 'seedling to cup' tours daily.
